The problem with how our real estate taxes are figured is this - many of our elected officials, or their friends/family members, own law firms that work to lower real estate taxes for homeowners. They put a huge raise in ours and then make a fortune off of people willing to pay them to have it lowered. I'm sure you had a bunch of mail come from various lawyers who will work for you - some wanting to be paid as much as 50% of the tax savings they get for you. Do some research as to who owns these law firms. It's a simple connection. I will never pay for a lawyer to do the work. I always appeal myself. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Regardless, this is the largest jump I have ever had in my 30 plus years of being a Cook County home owner. The huge value jumps make no sense and do not at all reflect what is going on in my neighborhood.
